I am at peace with whoever is at peace with you and at war with whoever is at war with you

Rab'i al-Thani 2 1439

From Abdur Rahman slave of Umm Salama from his grandfather Sabih who said: "We were at the door of Rasulullah (saw) so he gathered Ali and Fatimah and Hassan and Husayn and he gathered them, and Rasulullah (saw) exited and said: "You are upon good," And by his Khaybari cloak he gathered them with him and said: "I am at war with whoever is at war with you and at peace with whoever is at peace with you." "
[Asad al-Ghaba 1/513]

Narrated to me from Abdullah from Talid bin Sulayman from Abul Hajaf from Abi Hazim from Abi Husayra who said: "The Nabi (saw) looked at Ali, Hasan, Husayn and Fatimah and said: "I am at war with whoever is at war with you, and at peace with whoever is at peace with you." "
[Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal 2/442]
[Grade: "In the hadith is Talid bin Sulayman, and with him there is scholarly difference, and the other narrators are Sahih." (al-Haythami in Majm az-Zawaid)]

Narrated Zaid bin Arqam:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to 'Ali, Fatimah, Al-Hasan and Al-Husain: "I am at war with whoever makes war with you, and peace for whoever makes peace with you."
[Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith #150]
[Grade: Da'if (Darussalam)]

It was narrated that Zaid bin Arqam said:
"The Messenger of Allah said to 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain: 'I am peace for those with whom you make peace, and I am war for those with whom you make war.'"
[Tirmidhi, Hadith #4244]

32181 - Narrated from Malik bin Isma'il from Ahbat bin Nasr from as-Sadi from Sabih from Zayd bin Arqam: "The Nabi (saw) said to Fatimah and Hasan and Husayn (as): "I am at war with whoever is at war with you and at peace with whoever is at peace with you." "
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/378]

  1. Sahih - Ibn Hajar, Sahih Ibn Hajar, 15/433
  2. Hasan - Hakim an-Nishaburi, al-Mustadrak ala as-Sahihayn, 3/161
  3. Hasan - ad-Dhahabi in his Talkhees, al-Mustadrak ala as-Sahihayn 3/161

  5. "In the hadith is Talid bin Sulayman, and with him there is scholarly difference, and the other narrators are Sahih." - al-Haythami, Majm az-Zawa'id,

Sunni scholars who declared this hadith Tawatir (Narrated from many sources):
  1. Ibn Hazm, al-Mahali bil Athar, 7/489
  2. at-Tahawi, Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar, 1/474

Which of these narrations are reliable?:

The most reliable narration from these is the one narrated from Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, of which all the narrators are reliable.

32181 - Narrated from Malik bin Isma'il from Asbat bin Nasr from as-Sadi from Sabih the slave of Umm Salama from Zayd bin Arqam: "The Nabi (saw) said to Fatimah and Hasan and Husayn (as): "I am at war with whoever is at war with you and at peace with whoever is at peace with you." "
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/378]

Here is a breakdown of the narrators:

  • as-Sadi: an-Nisani said: Sound in hadith. And Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qitan said: There is no objection to him. And Ahmad bin Hanbal said: Reliable (thiqah). [Seer A'lam an-Nubala 5/265]

The last two narrators were both Sahaba, and by Sunni standards all Sahaba are reliable. By Shia standards as well there is no proof that either of those narrators were not trustworthy. On the third narrator, as-Sadi, there is some difference in opinion among Sunni scholars over how trustworthy he is, however the majority opinion is that he is a trustworthy narrator.

Conclusion: This hadith is reliable, and proves that whoever fights the Ahlulbayt (as), like how Aisha (la) fought Ali (as) in Jamal, has waged war against Rasulullah (saw).
